Frequently Asked Questions
What does the app do?
Every MacBook comes with build-in support for a setting called low and automatic power mode, select MacBook's also support high power mode. Normally you have to change these from the system settings, the PowerMode app gives you an easier way to switch between these energy modes.
The app also gives you the option to automatically enable low power mode on low battery.
Which macOS versions are supported?
The app supports macOS 26.0 and newer.
Is my MacBook model supported?
All MacBooks running macOS 26.0 or later are supported. Note that only MacBook's are supported. Mac desktops are not supported as they do not support energy modes.
How does enable lower mode on low battery work?
When enabled, this feature will automatically enable low power mode when the battery level falls below 20%. It will be reset to the original energy mode when connecting to a power source or can be cancelled until sufficiently charged by manually selecting another energy mode.
Helper
Why does the app require a helper to be installed?
Currently, the only programmatic interface to change the energy mode is the pmset terminal command.
The pmset interface is designed such that it requires privileges to make any changes to the energy mode. As there are currently no alternatives to this, a helper tool had to be created which, when installed and approved by the user, can use the pmset interface.
What security measures have been taken in the helper tool?
When developing this helper tool, the latest security protocols were used. This includes verifying the connection using modern API's and using enabling sandboxing which restricts the helper tool such that it can only make changes to preference files actually used by pmset.
